It’s that time of year again…just last night as my husband and I drove around the corner in our subdivision he commented on the number of kids who were now playing road hockey. That’s right, hockey season is nearly upon us. It’s a time of year that is near and dear to the hearts of many Canadians.
This is why it’s unfortunate that Health Canada has just advised Canadians to stop using WJD PRO ice hockey goaltender helmets and WJD PRO “CAT EYE” face protectors, due to the potential for serious eye or head injury. Ironic, isn’t it?
These products don’t meet CSA (Canadian Standards Association) standards. According to Health Canada’s website,
The WJD Pro goaltender helmets do not provide adequate impact protection in the event of a fall to the ice, collision with another player, or impact from a puck or hockey stick. Their continued use could result in serious injury such as a concussion or other serious head trauma.
These helmets and face protectors are manufactured in Burlington and Caledonia, Ontario. No incidents have (yet) been reported. Please check Health Canada’s website for more detailed information about how to determine if your equipment is affected by this advisory.
