Publix Super Markets: A Little Greener

One of my biggest peeves is the problem with grocery store bags. Whether paper or plastic, it’s all waste to me, and I’m forever fighting a battle of what do I do with all these bags? I’m a creative person, but honestly, I’m swimming in bags I don’t want to just throw out and therefore perpetuate the problem.

The alternative, as some of you know, is to use canvas/cotton bags. And I swear, I’ve been meaning to get some for ages, but the truth? I’ve been too cheap to fork over from $5 to $20 per bag when I know I need a ton of them.

And here’s where Publix saves the day. Publix Super Markets is a regional chain, in the South. They have had a plastic bag recycling program for a long time (which I always forget about and thus end up drowning in bags until I suddenly remember and then show up to my local store with 5,000 bags). But they’ve recently introduced an item that I love: a “green” shopping bag that’s reusable, sturdy, and cheap! How cheap? Each one is $1.49. You just can’t beat that.

I’ve been using my bags for a couple of weeks now, and they do not disappoint. They have enough room to really fill them, and so far, no breakage or damage.  It’s been a good experience for me, and I hope it really catches on. In my local store, at least, they have displays of the bags in at least three or four different locations throughout the store.

Publix has long offered cotton shopping bags for sake at about $5 or $6 a pop. They also offer a selection of organic food, one that seems to be growing, judging by the way I regularly see new items pop up (for example, they recently began carrying the Earth’s Best line of baby food, and I’d like to think my constantly requesting it on their website had something to do with it).

So I have to give an acknowledgment to this company for taking some steps in the right direction. I hope they keep this kind of behavior and attitude up.

This is my first post here at Moms Speak Up, so let me say “Hi!” to all of you. For those of you who don’t know me (though, are there really any of you out there who don’t?!), I am Tere of A Mom, a Blog and the Life In-Between. I’m pleased to be here, pleased to meet you, and pleased to put the beat-down on big corporations, governments and anyone else who deserves it (and praise, too, occasionally).

Shaw’s supermarkets have begun selling the canvas bags as well. They’re pretty sturdy, but are on the small side (for my taste anyway). I started taking my own bags a few years ago for the same reason: too many plastic bags!! Didn’t know what to do with them.

I just wanted to say, too, that I had no idea who you were! So, nice to meet you too!

I LOVE my Green Bags from Publix! I’ve had them for a few weeks, though I bought way more than I’ll ever need b/c I didn’t realize how much they hold…Oh, well.

I keep a bunch in my trunk, and a few on the floor on the passenger side (s I don’t forget to bring them). I have used them at Target, Office Max and the mall. It’s kind of awkward to carry them around if you don’t have a shopping cart or a stroller, but one or two are plenty for a regular mall trip for me.

As a fellow Floridian, I’ve grown up with Publix and refuse to shop anywhere else (unless they piss me off again and resume selling trashy mags where my kids can see them).

I was really happy to see those green bags but I was skeptical as to whether they would actually hold up. Now that I know they do, I’m going to get some,

I bought some cute red Trader Joes Bags in California and use them at my local store here in Indiana. They looked at me funny, but it worked. I think I need to start writing letters to the store. http://thatslifev2.blogspot.com/2007/09/red-bagging-it.html

I don’t live near Publix supermarkets, but like the previous poster, I have bought some of the Trader Joes bags to use. My problem is that I keep forgetting them when I go to the store!

p.s. nice to meet you too! I will be posting here occasionally as well. :)

Hi Tere!! Great post! I use the Trader Joe’s bags too. I think that all super markets should do this although I always find uses for my plastic bags too. I think it would be great to cut down anyways! Congrats on the new gig!

I love the Green Bags!! I keep forgetting to bring them too, but when I do, I love them. They fit a lot; they’re sturdy; and they keep groceries in check during transport!

Like Ana, I didn’t realize how much could fit in them, so I bought 10!! I had a big big shopping day that day. Anyway, the bagger only used, like four or five. Wow.

So, you can spend about $7.50 and have enough for a big shopping day.

I just bought some here in FL too! So far, even just 3 have been enough. And I bring them into other stores too (altho Wlamart looked at me like I had 2 heads but thats no surprise I guess…). They were 99c here, an even better deal!

My big issue is trying to REMEMBER to bring them in. I gather publix will give you a peel off window decal as a reminder. I have mine in my front seat so I won’t forget and I still don’t remember. So I have taken to putting my purse INSIDE the green bag when I am on my way and its worked so far. :)
