About This Blog

Moms Speak Up is collaborative blog of writers from various backgrounds. We're talking about the environment, dangerous imports, health care, food safety, media and marketing, education, politics and many other hot topics of concern.

About Us

We are women, parents, consumers, voters and much, much more and we're fed up with the "business as usual" attitude of politicians & greedy corporations. It's time for us to speak up and be heard!

War is not for children, and other living things.

Please call your Members of Congress each day this week. It can take you as little as ten minutes a day to do this. Tell them that increasing war funding does NOT increase children’s safety.

And please, pass it on.

My weekly Tennessee Peaceable Assembly visits to Congressman Jim Cooper’s office (toddler in tow) have yielded the knowledge that *most* people calling, writing and visiting the Congressman over the last several weeks have been doing so in outrage over my state’s newly increased cigarette tax, raised to help pay for SCHIP (State Children’s Health Insurance Program), a ten year old national program which is slated to expire at the end of the month, barring some intervention or extension.

Here in Tennessee, our state constitution charges its citizens with “instructing” our public servants. Shouldn’t the fact that smoker’s rights V children’s healthcare is such a stink tell us that wellbeing for all, needs a larger voice? I mean, smoke ‘em you got ‘em, but let’s look at the big picture here, folks, and look at what money allocated for “security” *really* pays for…. It ISN’T environmental preservation, an end to poverty or the promotion of peace.

Since half of every dollar earned goes toward security in this country, and women wield 83% of the consumer power in the US of A, a whole lotta mamas (and papas) would do well to raise their voices for PEACE. All over this land….

I couldn’t agree more. We are mamas, hear us roar! And then help us help future generations by giving them things they should already have - like clean air and water and a life without war!

I WILL take then 10 minutes to call my Congressmen and Congresswomen. I hope everyone who reads this post will, too.
