About This Blog

Moms Speak Up is collaborative blog of writers from various backgrounds. We're talking about the environment, dangerous imports, health care, food safety, media and marketing, education, politics and many other hot topics of concern.

About Us

We are women, parents, consumers, voters and much, much more and we're fed up with the "business as usual" attitude of politicians & greedy corporations. It's time for us to speak up and be heard!

The Onslaught

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m way opposed to the barrage of sexy/eroticized/body hatred-inducing imagery that kids are freely exposed to simply by driving down the street past billboards, not to mention TV, magazines, movies, malls, sides of buses etc. Of course, there’s always some asshat that says “Just don’t look if you don’t like it.” If only it were that simple…

The fact is our girls in particular ARE faced with an onslaught of that garbage and girls age 10-14 are one of the fastest growing suicide statistic demographics.

Watch this video, aptly entitled “Onslaught” and if you didn’t get it before, maybe you will now:

If you think this video is worth sharing, PLEASE send your friends and readers here to see it. It’s a must for moms/parents of girls and maybe boys, too.

Also, visit Shaping Youth for more thoughtful discussion on how to combat the negative media messages that pervade kids’ psyches and essentially shape how they feel about themselves and others.

I have no idea what the answer is. It’s almost like parents are going to have to take the entire burden of combating these images and ensuring that their children develop a healthy self-image despite all the crap out there. I just don’t see the media or the government helping anytime soon.

I also think that parents of boys (like myself!) should not forget that they need to be taught what real beauty and health are as well. We don’t need boys growing into adulthood believing all of this garbage is what makes a woman worthwhile.

This is so scary. There is no cut and dry answer. Having a son, I try to impress upon him that beauty comes from within… a hard act to follow when he is pummeled by media that tells him otherwise.

Yeah, that is scary and quite disgusting to watch.

I agree with Cristina about teaching boys what real beauty and health mean, that it’s not what you see on billboards and TV.

    Oh, MEDIA!! You devil.

By the way, this reminded me of this book I read awhile ago called Venus Envy: A history of Cosmetic Surgery.
    Fascinating and disgusting. Highly recommended.

Ugh. I have to say that things have definitely gotten worse since I was a teen. I read the Beauty Myth in college and always considered myself a feminist and still got caught up in the “pretty” crap that is forced upon us. I hope I am not messing up my daughter. I am pushing her to play soccer so she will have more self esteem than I did as a teen! Love the video

Hmm, did the tone of this post change overnight? I think you had asked for suggestions on what we can do. Parents (and aunts, uncles, cousins, etc.) need to rally together against the creators of this “beauty myth,” one corporation at a time. I can’t believe that there aren’t some out there right now having these same discussions around their conference room table.
