With a Penstroke, Bush Takes Health Insurance from Kids

In rationalizing his decision today to veto legislation that would have expanded the State Children’s Health Insurance Program by $35 billion dollars over five years, President Bush said this:

[I] vetoed the bill because it was a step toward “federalizing” medicine and inappropriately expanded the program beyond its focus on helping poor children.

Well, Mr. President, as a mother and a caring human being, I believe that all children in this country should have health insurance - not just the really, really poor children, but all children, regardless of their family income level. If that means that I support ”federalizing” medicine, then I guess I do. And the reason I do, is that I view health care as a basic human right - just like access to water and food. I believe that it is the duty of the government to ensure that its citizens are provided these basic human rights. And I am willing to pay for it with my taxes.  In fact, I would be happy to pay for it with my taxes.

You, on the other hand, don’t seem to mind telling 10 million American children that they can’t see the doctor when they get sick. Unfortunately, their parents make too much money to qualify for Medicaid but not enough to buy private insurance.

I guess they’re just out of luck, huh? Perhaps they will pick themselves up by their bootstraps and figure something out. Or perhaps not. But not to worry, it’s only millions of children’s health that’s at stake.

Bush is a lazy, spoiled, functionally illiterate brat who has never gone without anything a day in his life, except maybe a line of coke. What would he know about the problems of those less fortunate than himself? Not much, obviously.

There are enough votes in the Senate to overturn the veto, but in the House, which votes first, we need about 20 more votes.

That said, Moveon.org and Moms Rising have an action alert for local rallies organizing at key Reps. local offices.

I’m going to try and get to a rally tomorrow if I can.

I too in the past have had my doubts about socialized medicince, but it would be immoral I think to not give free access to health care for all children no matter their income. Once again, it is the middle class who are getting the short end of the deal.

What the fuck is the problem?

Actually, Izzy hits it on the spot with the first line of her comment…..

    What an idiot.

I’m torn. My parents remember growing up with socialized medicine in Hungary and my twin brother and I have gone overseas for treatments (for a birth defect) that were not approved/accepted here in the United States. Still. The idea of our government having any type of control on the type of treatment my family gets, scares me. I’m hoping to educate myself on this, further and sites like the Move On and Moms Rising help. Either way, with four children, I hate to think what it would cost - figuratively, as well as literally.

I am so freaking pissed about this one. We live right in the gray area between eligible and not eligible for this program. KayTar is the only one insured! We pay out the rear so she has proper coverage.

If Big Pharma gave .5% of their billions of dollars of profits to insure every child in this country, problem would be solved. Because it will not with this current administration!

You need to read the fine print on this one. It’s all about expanding the system to adults, kids of parents who can afford insurance and illegal immigrants. Once again the democrats and their cohorts in the mainstream media are fooling a lot of people.

P.S. Dear Liz, you gotta be nuts if you’re reading and listening to anything Move On says. They’re far leftwing nutjobs over there.

  15. Izzy said:

Sorry Jo but it’s actually all about money. Somehow it’s okay to spend (and grossly mismanage) billions every month in Iraq but spending money to insure children of middle class working poor families just can’t be done. Please…

And honestly, if Bush is so concerned about illegal immigrants having access to SCHIPS, maybe he ought address the illegal immigration problem FIRST.
