The Ugly Side of Flowers

msu_rose.jpg

Now that Mother’s Day has passed, perhaps you are looking at some wilting flowers. My husband rarely gives me flowers. Not because he is an unromantic soul; we have two abyssinian cats that will eat anything with a leaf no matter where it is placed, and then proceed to get sick. About a month ago, my husband told me about how the typical cut flowers we would purchase on Mother’s Day are grown with dangerous pesticides harmful to the workers. So what did I tell me husband?

I told my husband, no more cut flowers until we find a greener alternative. During my research, I found a great article through the Fair Trade Resource website. Read it here: Make A Green Statement With Your Next Bouquet. In the article, the author writes, “A sample of roses tested by the Environmental Working Group found up to 50 times the pesticide residues allowed in food.” That will make you think twice before taking a big whiff of a rose bouquet. Thankfully there are easy to find alternatives: Sam’s Club Fair Trade Floral and VeriFlora.

I may be in the minority bu, I wouldn’t be surprised if I am not, in the past when my husband brought home (or sent home) an extraordinary bouquet of flowers from the florist - I had a niggling thought in the back of my mind - boy we could have used that money on . . . . I even felt guilty about feeling guilty that he was sending me flowers. As much as I appreciated the gesture, and I love flowers and gardening, I have a very hard time getting beyond the cost - now that I know there’s an environmental cost as well as financial - it makes me feel better about the whole thing.

    Good point about the flowers!

Also Emily at Wheels on the Bus had some suggestions of other ways to spend money in honor of a special occasion, including charitable and environmental groups.

One time my husband adopted a whale for me. We lived near a center and anyway it’s one of the best gifts!

Susan, I am with you on the feeling like flower money could be better spent. When I do get flowers/plants I appreciate those I can replant.
