Green Our Vaccines March Held

green-our-vaccines-logo.gifWhen I first got word about the Green Our Vaccines March, I was curious to see just how much media coverage there would be on the issue.  ABC News has a front page link to the story, under “Celeb Causes”.  There is a video from the morning’s interview on “Good Morning America“.

As of a few minutes ago there was over a 140 comments, and folks are letting their opinion be known.  The mainstream medical community keeps saying the same thing.

There has been no scientific link proven between autism and vaccines.  The CDC says that measles cases are on the rise. Doctors are scared that the number of parents saying no to vaccines will grow and that will lead to childhood disease breakouts.

That is definitely scary stuff, but is it enough of a reason to declare those who believe there is a connection are just naive or trying to hard to find a cause?  Because that is the impression being served through news reports and throughout doctor’s offices around the country.  The impression that yes,  the medical community does acknowledge that autism is horrible, but all you parents who think there is a connection are wrong and just to need to drop the issue.

Here are the questions that come to mind.

Has this debate been a distraction from finding out conclusive evidence to what causes autism?  I don’t see how a debate should keep the medical community from doing research.

The number of vaccines have been growing the past years and autism is growing.  Connection?  Maybe. Maybe not.

Why do kids get autism?  I have not read any report stating a conclusive reason.

So is 19 the magic number?  That is how many studies the Institute of Medicine has done so far.

Who determines when to quit?  When to give up?

What exactly are all the ingredients in each vaccine?

Childhood asthma and allergies are on the rise too. Vaccines? Or rather the toxins and the pollutants that our children are exposed to?

Autism research thus far hasn’t turned up a conclusive answer but their does seem to be an acknowledgment that there is more than one trigger and vaccines could be a part of it. There was a case, in Georgia I think, recently where it was proven that a girl’s autism was linked to vaccination but she suffered from a rare genetic disorder that allowed this to happen.

We expose our children to all sorts of things on a daily basis. Vaccines are calculated risks just like any other medical intervention. As parents we have to make assessments and the final call. One thing that allows us to not vaccinate is the fact that so many parents do vaccinate and thus provide our unvaccinated kids with a bit of a buffer. Is that a good idea or even fair?

Vaccines are not foolproof. There is evidence that many do not provide life long immunity and soon we will have to ponder boosters for ourselves as well as the the thorny issue of our babies getting shots.

Questioning is a good thing. Being aware is a great thing. Making the vaccine call based on what is best for your child in the long run is part of being the parent.

We asked our doctors to spread out our vacien schedule, per the precautionary principle. For our family, it felt like a lot too soon. They accomodated the request. I wonder why the schedule is the way it is? My guess is that it is a cost/convenience approach, as well as a public health angle since they worry many families either can’t or won’t come in enough times to spread them out. I hate being caught in that trap when I know I will do it, but I see their worry about not reaching enough kids.

That said, there’s the kindergarten requirement and that’ll get ‘em if nothing else does. I for one don’t care for the kindergarten cutoff - ther’es no connection between school and vaccines that doesn’t apply outside school (i.e., infectious diseases being spread among kids). I guess being forced to do anything always makes me uncomfortable!
