Scarring Sparklers

A few days from now the night sky will be brighten by fireworks, big and small.  I have small scar on my stomach from when I was 8 years old.  My family was spending the 4th of July with friends.  My best friend at the time and I were handed sparklers.  Find out what happened.

Seemingly innocent pieces of sparking fire we thought, but we ran into each other and her sparkler burned through my t-shirt and left a nice scar.

I still light sparklers, but I don’t run with them.  Please check out The National Council on Fireworks for some safety tips.  One of the tips suggests only people over the age of 12 handle sparklers.  That might surprise a few folks, because the sparklers seem like harmless firework for younger kids, but I have a scar to prove otherwise.  Sparklers are the cause of 1/3 of firework injuries caused to kids under the age of 6.  For more info on sparklers check out this media release on sparkler use caution

Wow, I remember how they always stung my hand and as much as I wanted them, I hated that stinging. It made the adults crazy, “here little girl, take this pretty pretty sparkler,” and I’d say, “No thanks, it hurts,” and they’d push and push and finally I’d take it and hold it as long as I could stand it and hand it back. What a difference 30 something years makes in parenting and safety LOL.

I can’t imagine being burned by one on the stomach. Ouch!

I don’t let sparklers near my kids. They terrified me as a kid. Why would I want to hold something flaming in my hand and near my face?! Last year friends got *seriously* hurt at a fireworks show gone awry in Northern Virginia. The mom and 2 boys are still paying the price a year later. Now I’m totally paranoid.
