Scarring Sparklers

A few days from now the night sky will be brighten by fireworks, big and small.  I have small scar on my stomach from when I was 8 years old.  My family was spending the 4th of July with friends.  My best friend at the time and I were handed sparklers.  Find out what happened.  Read the rest of this entry »

Mental Health Support for our Veterans

I don’t always agree with the bills that are introduced or passed in our U.S. Congress, but one bill that has quietly passed through the Senate is the Veterans’ Mental Health and Other Care Improvements Act of 2008.  The basics of the bill are wider provisions on mental health support for our veterans and their families.  What are the mental health issues facing our troops?

Diabetes Increasing

msu_fruits.gifHow high does a number need to get before it becomes impressive?  How about 24 million?  What about 3 million?

There are currently 24 million people in the U.S. who have diabetes.

The past two years has seen an increase of 3 million people in the U.S. with diabetes.

Check the facts here on the CDC website.  Those numbers are saddening, but what is even more saddening is this little tidbit.

Exfoliating Plastic Beads. Not Beautiful.

msu_olay_slate.jpgSay it isn’t so?  I have been blessed with hormones that gave me acne not in my teen years, when everyone expects to get zits, but in my late 20’s and beyond.  For the past year or so, I have found Oil of Olay’s “anti wrinkle/anti blemish” lotion to work wonders.  I know totally not green of me.  I confess, I am not perfect. Please forgive me.

But NOW, I read this on Slate about Oil of Olay’s exfoliating plastic debacle

Humor is Needed Sometimes, Mommy Math

msulaugh.jpgCould it be the news around the world and within our own nation is just a tad bit depressing?  Despair seems to be what the media wants us to feel.  We have a few choices when despair is coming at us from all directions: fight back, run away, or laugh.  That is right, laugh.   Personally, I can’t handle being angry, sad, and discouraged for very long.  Thankfully, I came across a humorous website geared towards moms.

Has It Comes To This? Green Walking.

shoes.jpg I am a walker and sometimes runner.   Growing up in Wisconsin, my father and I would take long walks through neighborhoods.  My father and I love architecture, and we would pick out our favorite houses and describe why it was our favorite.  I suppose these walks were on par with green walking.  What is green walking?

Green Our Vaccines March Held

green-our-vaccines-logo.gifWhen I first got word about the Green Our Vaccines March, I was curious to see just how much media coverage there would be on the issue.  ABC News has a front page link to the story, under “Celeb Causes”.  There is a video from the morning’s interview on “Good Morning America“.

As of a few minutes ago there was over a 140 comments, and folks are letting their opinion be known.  The mainstream medical community keeps saying the same thing.  Read the rest of this entry »

Green Our Vaccines March

green-our-vaccines-logo.gif Over at Treehugger, there was a short listing of hollywoods sexiest vegetarians.  It was not the vegetarian aspect that made my day, or the the sexy part, but the link to Jenny McCarthy and Jim Carrey’s latest press release regarding the Green Our Vaccine march this coming Wednesday on June 4th in Washingtong D.C.  What is their goal?

Health Care Chain Eliminates Bottled Water

gmfwaterbottlessm1.jpg   Just when you might think the “big guys” are not listening.   A major health care chain in the Midwest will stop offering bottled water at its 20 hospitals starting Sunday.  SSM is among the first health care chains in the nation to take such a step toward reducing bottled water.  How many bottles will be eliminated?

Contaminated Water?

msu_water.jpgOne of the reasons I enjoy writing for Moms Speak Up is the opportunity to research topics that are fairly new to me.  Recently, I learned the difference between an aquifer and aquitard.  More importanly, I learned how these two water-related words affect our every day life.
