Green Our Vaccines March Held

green-our-vaccines-logo.gifWhen I first got word about the Green Our Vaccines March, I was curious to see just how much media coverage there would be on the issue.  ABC News has a front page link to the story, under “Celeb Causes”.  There is a video from the morning’s interview on “Good Morning America“.

As of a few minutes ago there was over a 140 comments, and folks are letting their opinion be known.  The mainstream medical community keeps saying the same thing.  Read the rest of this entry »

Making it personal: Get to know some uninsured children

Kyla, from The Journey, has shared her daughter’s and family’s story many times in many places. Most recently, she told it to elected officials in Austin—where she explained that children who lack insurance and health care cost us all more than any program such as the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) ever could. And aren’t children more valuable that any price we could name? (You can read her speech here.) Here’s Kyla’s story:

Two months ago, my daughter lost her insurance coverage when the plan she was covered by shut down. When I applied for another individual plan, she was denied because of her complex, but undiagnosed medical issues. We were referred to the High Risk Pool, which was created for children with a high need for medical care, but she is not eligible for that program either, because my husband’s employer offers a group plan.

The problem is, we cannot afford a plan that costs 30% of our monthly income, and even if we could, it is not comprehensive and will not cover many of my daughter’s medical needs. For example, her therapies, which cost upwards of $400 per week are not covered, neither are her genetic appointments and related tests. A single genetic blood test can cost more than $3,000. Even if it were possible to cover the cost, it does not make sense to pay nearly $1,000 per month for a plan that does not cover her medical tests and treatment.

Interview with Laura Guerra-Cardus of the Children’s Defense Fund

Happy child and mom getting health care at Texas Children’s Hospital.

President Bush vetoed a bill that would have expanded and provided additional much needed funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP) (despite it passing Congress) and hasn’t got an alternate plan. This is a serious problem for the 9.4 million uninsured children in the US, 4 million of whom are uninsured directly as a result of President Bush’s veto.

In response, the Children’s Defense Fund has teamed up with Cover the Uninsured as part of their Healthy Child Campaign. Today, Moms Speak Up is honored to present our question and answer interview with Laura Guerra-Cardus of the Children’s Defense Fund.

Julie Pippert Question: Your organization, Children’s Defense Fund, is sponsoring a Cover the Uninsured week. Tell us a little about what that is and what you hope to accomplish with it.

Laura Guerra-Cardus Answer: Led by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Cover the Uninsured Week (CTUW) is the nation’s largest mobilization on behalf of America’s 47 million uninsured. Since 2003, the Week has brought together business owners, union members, educators, students, patients, hospital staff, physicians, nurses, faith leaders and their congregants, and many others to speak out on behalf of the uninsured and demand that our national leaders make the issue of the uninsured their top priority.” (Click here to learn more.) Thousands of events across the nation take place on this week and in general focus on public education and enrollment events.

What will it take to get your attention? Alarming trends in US show serious health care issues

Summary: Lack of preventive health care, lack of access to health care, lifestyle, poverty and pollution combine into a perfect storm that has women’s life expectancy dropping.

Elizabeth Edwards, in her recent NY Times article, coined the term “strobe-light journalism.” She defines this as media attention, “…in which the outlines are accurate enough but we cannot really see the whole picture.”

“Did you, for example, ever know a single fact about Joe Biden’s health care plan? Anything at all? But let me guess, you know Barack Obama’s bowling score.” Edwards asked in her article.

It’s true.

And yet, health care plans are and should be, one of the most important topics.

Recently, I began paying more attention to health and health care. I’m not alone; others have been as well. If you connect the dots between various and plentiful news stories, you can create something meaningful. In this case, you can see a major health care crisis pattern emerge, and not just the “lack of access to care” one you might immediately think of.

Do you want to know about this health crisis? Keep reading…
